The Black Prince

The Black Prince

2022 | Expanded Essay | 30 mins

Ex Libris Gallery - Newcastle University 22nd August - 2nd September 2022

Age ten, I became trapped in the Community Charge demonstrations in Trafalgar Square, more commonly known as the Poll Tax Riots.

The Black Prince is an installation combining elements of sculpture, architecture, moving image, sound, testimony, archive, collage, and text, in an essayistic assemblage.

Capteur

Capteur

2019/2020 | Expanded Essay

Capteur recounts my personal passage through the conflict of the Poll Tax Riot and the testimonies of individuals present during the demonstration. Their own passages: deliberate, accidental, enforced, and abstract.

Capteur is a series of inter-related essay forms.

Capteur is made up of autobiographical accounts of the day, archive documents and documentary footage, algorithm and public accounts of the riot.

A speculative environment is constructed that draws together human, architectural, and technological players.

Keepsake Exhibition - Bradford Cathedral - Justice4Grenfell Campaign

We're All Someone's Daughter, We're All Someone's Son is a collection of 72 keepsakes - miniature objects of wonder that contain our reflections of love, loss and life. A collective artwork with over 35 makers from all walks of life

The work in the Keepsake exhibition was created specifically to coincide with the first anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire in London. The artworks are a way for us to remember and mark the lives lost and to reflect on the issues surrounding this avoidable tragedy.

Each artwork was donated by the artist and sales go directly to the Justice4Grenfell Campaign.

Material Potential / Beyond - Newcastle University

The Derealisation Effect is an extended essayistic notebook film developed out of The Golden Record. The film's material is organised in seven parts combining archive material, newly shot footage in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Berlin and the UK, and material taken from the Golden Record (a phonograph record put on board the Voyager spacecraft in 1977, intended for intelligent extra terrestrial life). The film's unfolding philosophy covers academic Bernard Moitesssiers 7 principles of The Derealisation Effect.

2015 | Illustration | Poem | Zine

In 2015 Jean McEwan produced a zine called 'How do we get through this', made up of responses to the general election result of 9th May and the prospect of 5 years of conservative government. For the Love of People (Caroline Hick and me) contributed the illustration and poem.

The zine can be brought from Jean's website and all proceeds go to Bradford Metropolitan Foodbank
